Half Moon Festival Koh Phangan – The Complete Guide 2026

Twice a month, somewhere between the Full Moon and the new moon, the southern coast of Koh Phangan transforms. First, a sun-soaked beach club fills with electronic music and salty air. Then, the forest takes over — three stages carved into the jungle, lasers cutting through the canopy, bass you feel in your chest until sunrise. That’s the Half Moon Festival, and it’s been running since 2002.

What Is the Half Moon Festival?

The Half Moon Festival is Koh Phangan’s longest-running electronic music festival, founded by DJs Jao Pattanasiri and Oren Mizrachi. For over 20 years it has been quietly one of the island’s best-kept secrets — a two-day ritual that splits neatly into two completely different experiences.

Day 1 — Harmony Beach Club The festival opens at Harmony Beach Club on Bantai Road. Think infinity pool, sea views, international DJs, and a sunset that hits different when the music is right. Doors open at 2 PM and the party runs until midnight.

Day 2 — The Magical Forest Around 9:30 PM the next evening, the real jungle begins. The Magical Forest in Baan Tai — about 2km inland — hosts three stages running simultaneously until sunrise. This is the heart of the Half Moon experience: open air, no ceiling, no limits.

Music & Stages

The Half Moon Festival covers a wide spectrum of electronic music, with something for every kind of night owl:

  • Tribal Stage — progressive psytrance, deep trance, and the spiritual side of electronic music
  • Funky Stage — tech house, melodic techno, deep house
  • Urban Stage — hip-hop, R&B, reggae, and urban beats

The overall sound palette runs from Tech/Melodic House and Progressive Psytrance through to harder Techno, with international headliners and Thai artists sharing the bill throughout the season.

2026 Half Moon Festival Dates

The Half Moon Festival runs twice a month, timed around the Full Moon Party cycle — typically one event a few days before the Full Moon and one a few days after. High season (November–April) brings the biggest lineups and full two-day format. Low season (May–October) events are held exclusively at Harmony Beach Club, running 2 PM – 2 AM.

High Season Dates 2026:

  • January 10–11
  • January 25–26
  • February 9–10
  • April 11–12

Check halfmoonfestival.com for the full updated calendar — new dates are added throughout the year.

How to Get There

Harmony Beach Club (Day 1) Located on Bantai Road on Koh Phangan’s southern coast. Easily reachable by taxi/songthaew from anywhere on the island — 10–20 minutes from most accommodation hubs.

Magical Forest (Day 2) Situated approximately 2km inland in the Baan Tai area. Songthaews and taxi trucks run directly to the forest entrance from Ban Tai 7-Eleven and Thong Sala throughout the night.

Getting to Koh Phangan:

  • From Koh Samui — 30–45 min ferry to Thong Sala Pier. Multiple departures daily, last boat around 6:30 PM.
  • From Bangkok/mainland — fly to Koh Samui (USM), then ferry to Koh Phangan. Or train/bus to Surat Thani + ferry (2–3 hrs).
  • From Koh Tao — 1–1.5 hr high-speed ferry to Thong Sala.

What to Expect: Tips for First-Timers

Arrive early to Harmony Beach Club. The Day 1 beach party is underrated — the best spots fill up. Get there by 3–4 PM to settle in before sunset.

The forest is the main event. If you have to choose one day, most regulars choose the Magical Forest for the full Half Moon experience. Three stages, all night, zero compromise.

Book accommodation in advance for high season. January–February Half Moon dates often overlap with peak tourist traffic. Baan Tai and Thong Sala are the closest areas to both venues.

Dress for two climates. The beach club is hot and humid. The forest at 3 AM can feel cool and breezy once you stop moving — bring a light layer.

Taxis run all night. Getting back from the Magical Forest after sunrise is easy — songthaews and taxi trucks operate all night for the event.

About the Venues

Harmony Beach Club — a luxury beachfront club on Bantai Road, Koh Phangan, with an infinity pool, international sound system, and open-air dance floor. Doubles as a daytime beach club and sunset bar outside of event days.

Magical Forest — an outdoor festival ground carved into the jungle near Baan Tai. Three open-air stages, professional lighting and laser rigs, and the kind of acoustic environment only a tropical forest can provide. No photos policy in parts of the venue adds to the intimacy of the experience.

Half Moon vs Full Moon — What’s the Difference?

Half Moon Festival Full Moon Party
Vibe Underground, curated, intimate Mass event, 20,000–40,000 people
Music Psytrance, techno, melodic house Commercial EDM, various genres
Duration 2-day format (beach + jungle) Single all-night beach party
Venue Club + jungle forest Haad Rin Beach (open)
Entry 1,300–2,700 THB 200 THB
Crowd Electronic music community International tourists

The Half Moon is for people who are into electronic music. The Full Moon Party is a bucket-list beach experience. Both are essential Koh Phangan — they’re just different nights.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does the Half Moon Festival happen? Twice a month, timed around the Full Moon cycle. One event typically falls a few days before the Full Moon, the other a few days after.

Do I need to buy tickets in advance? Yes — especially for high season (December–April). Online tickets are cheaper than door prices and some events sell out. Book at least a few days ahead.

Can I attend just one day? Yes. Day 1 (Harmony Beach Club) and Day 2 (Magical Forest) are ticketed separately. Most people who’ve been before choose the forest night.

Is it safe? The Half Moon Festival is a well-established, professionally run event. Standard festival safety applies — don’t leave drinks unattended, keep valuables secure, and arrange your transport home in advance.

What’s the dress code? None officially, but most people go festival casual — comfortable, cool, and ready to dance. Closed-toe shoes are practical for the forest venue.

Is there accommodation nearby? Yes — Baan Tai village (walking distance from the Magical Forest) has guesthouses, bungalows and hotels at all price points. Book ahead for high season dates.
