SYMPHONY & PSALMS

The Psalms – one hundred and fifty miraculous songs traditional composed by the biblical king and shepherd David – are some of the most beloved religious poetry ever written.

Calliope Chamber Choir with Siam Sinfonietta presents settings of these glorious words from all over the world from four hundred years of musical history, including:

Thai premieres of:

— Leonard Bernstein’s exciting Chichester Psalms, for choir, solo soprano and orchestra, in the original Hebrew

— Monteverdi’s setting of Dixit Dominus in Latin from his iconic Vespers for six-part choir and orchestra

— Schütz’s German-language setting of Lobet den Herrn (Psalm 150) for four choirs and orchestra

and in addition some beloved psalm settings already previously heard in Thailand:

— Mozart’s setting from his Vesperae Solennes de Confessore Laudate Dominum

— Hubert Parry’s coronation anthem I was Glad, composed for the coronation of Edward VII and performed at every British coronation thereafter

— Rachmaninov’s setting of Psalm 104, Blagoslovi, dushe moya, Gospoda, from his All-Night Vigil

PLUS two gorgeous works for Symphony Orchestra

— Debussy — L’Après-midi d’un Faune — the sensuous masterpiece of impressionism

— Mozart: Symphony no. 40 — on every list of the the world’s top symphonies — elegant, heartrending, uplifting

This concert is one of Siam Sinfonietta’s Banyan Tree series. As it is on a weekday, the music will begin one hour later than usual for the series at 8 pm. Cocktails and snacks begin at 7 pm.

The Calliope Chamber Choir is one of Bangkok’s premier small choirs and is the resident chorus of Opera Siam. It specializes in all periods of the classical repertoire and sings regularly in English, Italian, German, Latin, French, Czech, and Russian. This concert will add Hebrew to its language list! The choir was founded by Somtow Sucharitkul, one of the original members of the reestablished Eton College Chapel Choir (founded in the 1970s on the closing of the Eton choir school) and choral scholar at Cambridge during the 1970s, member of the Purcell Society and other ensembles. Madeleine Supatranavij is the resident choir master.

The Siam Sinfonietta is one of Asia’s premier youth orchestra’s winner of multiple international awards and resident orchestra of Germany’s Oldenburg Film Festival. It has been featured on screen in several films including The Maestro: A Symphony of Terror and the Oscar nominated Tár. It is perhaps best known for its interpretations of Gustav Mahler, and for its highly successful film music events.

คณะนักร้องประสานเสียงคาลลิโอพี กับ สยามซินโฟนิเอตต้า จะนำเสนอคอนเสิร์ตชุดเพลงประวัติศาสตร์พร้อมคำร้องจากประวัติศาสต์การดนตรีสมัย 400 ปีรอบปฐมทัศน์ (ประเทศไทย) ได้แก่
— Leonard Bernstein : Chichester Psalms ขับร้องเป็นภาษาฮีบรูว์ดั้งเดิม โดยนักร้องประสานเสียง โซปราโนเดี่ยว กับ ออร์เคสตร้า
— Monteverdi : Dixit Dominus ขับร้องภาษาละติน
— Schütz : ภาษาเยอรมัน โดยนักร้องประสานเสียง 4 คนกับออร์เคสตร้า
