เตรียมพบกับครั้งแรกในประเทศไทยของ Ride วงอัลเทอร์เนทิฟร็อกจากอังกฤษที่ได้รับการยอบรับว่าเป็นอีกหนึ่งในต้นตำรับดนตรีชูเกซของยุคสมัย พวกเขาจะมาถ่ายทอดเพลงฮิตจากวันวานและผลงานล่าสุดแบบเน้นๆ ใน #HYHBKK Live! with Ride 3 สิงหาคมนี้ ณ Search Studio รามคำแหง 81

Ride คือวงดนตรีจากอ็อกซ์ฟอร์ดที่เกิดขึ้นเมื่อปี 1988 กับความน่าสนใจที่มีมือกีตาร์รับหน้าที่ร้องนำถึงสองคนนั่นคือ Andy Bell และ Mark Gardener ร่วมด้วย Loz Colbert (กลอง) และ Steve Queralt (เบส) โดยผลงานสองชุดแรกของพวกเขาอย่าง ‘Nowhere’ (1990) และ ‘Going Blank Again’ (1992) ที่มีเพลงฮิตอย่าง ‘Vapour Trail,’ ‘Seagull’ และ ‘Leave Them All Behind’ นั้นมีความโดดเด่นและลงตัวของการนำเสนอซาวด์กีตาร์แบนด์ดิบๆ และการเรียบเรียงดนตรีอันหนักหน่วง แต่กลับแฝงไว้ด้วยความอ่อนโยนเพราะถูกผนวกเข้ากับเมโลดี้ที่ร้อยเรียงออกมาอย่างงดงาม ซึ่งหลายๆ เพลงก็มีกลิ่นอายของไซเคเดลิกร็อกที่เลือกหยิบมาสร้างสรรค์ได้อย่างมีเอกลักษณ์ จนทำให้สื่อดนตรีต่างยกให้งานทั้งสองชุดเป็นอัลบั้มชูเกซที่ยอดเยี่ยมที่สุดตลอดกาล

แต่หลังจากที่อัลบั้มชุดที่ 2 และงานลำดับที่ 3 ‘Carnival of Light’ (1994) ได้ไต่ขึ้นอันดับที่ 5 ของ UK Albums Chart เป็นการการันตีความสำเร็จของ Ride ไปแล้วนั้น ผลงานชุดที่ 4 ‘Tarantula’ (1996) กลับได้รับกระแสตอบรับที่ไม่ดีเท่าที่ควร ส่งผลให้ในเวลาต่อมาไม่นานนักในปีเดียวกันที่สมาชิกวงต่างแยกย้ายไปตามทางของตัวเอง ซึ่งในปี 1999 Andy Bell ก็กลายมาเป็นมือเบสของ Oasis ไปโดยปริยาย

แม้จะไม่มีผลงานใหม่ๆ ออกมา แต่ Ride กลับเริ่มมีแฟนเพลงหน้าใหม่เพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ในช่วงหลายปีที่ห่างหายไป วงดนตรีชูเกซยุคหลังพากันยึดเพลงของพวกเขาเป็นต้นแบบ จนเมื่อปี 2014 การที่วงประกาศการกลับมารวมตัวกันได้สร้างความตื่นเต้นให้กับแฟนเพลงอย่างมาก และในที่สุดก็ออกอัลบั้มใหม่ในรอบ 21 ปีหลังจากงานชุดสุดท้ายก่อนแยกวง ใน ‘Weather Diaries’ (2017) พวกเขากลับมาพร้อมสีสันซาวด์ที่สดใหม่ที่เพิ่มองค์ประกอบอิเล็กทรอนิกส์เข้าไป แต่ยังคงไว้ซึ่งลายเซ็นของ Ride แบบที่หลายคนชื่นชอบ ก่อนจะเริ่มออกทัวร์อีกครั้งไปทั่วโลกโดยมีเพลงฮิตอย่าง ‘All I Want’ และมีอัลบั้มใหม่ออกมาอย่างต่อเนื่องในปี 2019 นั่นคือ ‘This Is Not a Safe Place’ รวมถึงงานล่าสุด ‘Interplay’ ที่เพิ่งปล่อยออกมาเมื่อเดือนมีนาคมของปีนี้ ซึ่งในอัลบั้มนี้พวกเขาได้ดึงเอาเสน่ห์ของ Ride ยุคเก่าที่ครบรสทั้งกีตาร์เดือดดาล ความสละสลวยและเมามายของท่วงทำนอง (‘Light in a Quiet Room’) ไปจนถึงบางเพลงที่ได้แรงบันดาลใจจากซาวด์ป๊อป 80 ของวงอย่าง Tears For Fears, Talk Talk (‘Monaco’) หรือแม้แต่ U2 ยุคแรกๆ (‘I Came to See the Wreck’) รับประกันว่าสามารถมัดใจได้ทั้งแฟนเพลงยุคเก๋าและผู้ฟังรุ่นใหม่ๆ ได้อย่างแน่นอน

Ride, originating from Oxford was founded in 1988, features the remarkable guitar skills of Andy Bell and Mark Gardener. Loz Colbert (drums) and Steve Queralt (bass) complete the ensemble. Their initial releases, ‘Nowhere’ (1990) and ‘Going Blank Again’ (1992), showcased hits like “Vapour Trail”, “Seagull” and “Leave Them All Behind” These albums were noted for their raw, guitar-driven sound and heavy yet subtly melodic musical arrangements. Infused with dreamlike melodies, many of their tracks incorporate elements of psychedelic rock, resulting in a unique blend that earned critical acclaim for both albums as seminal shoegaze works.

Despite the success of their second and third albums, particularly with ‘Carnival of Light’ (1994) reaching the fifth spot on the UK Albums Chart, Ride faced challenges. Their fourth album, ‘Tarantula’ (1996), was met with less enthusiasm than anticipated, leading to the band members parting ways shortly after its release. In 1999, Andy Bell coincidentally joined Oasis as their bassist. Despite a hiatus and no new releases, Ride gradually gained new fans. Their music continued to influence others in the post-shoegaze era. The band’s announcement of reuniting in 2014 sparked significant excitement among fans. After a 21-year gap following their last album, Ride made a remarkable comeback with ‘Weather Diaries’ (2017), infusing their music with a fresh, electronic twist while preserving their distinctive style. Their subsequent global tour featured hit tracks like “All I Want” They maintained their creative streak with consistent album releases, including ‘This Is Not a Safe Place’ in 2019 and the recent ‘Interplay’ released just this March. ‘Interplay’ captures the essence of classic Ride, blending energetic guitars, ethereal melodies, and captivating rhythms (“Light in a Quiet Room”). Some tracks even draw inspiration from 80s pop sensations like Tears For Fears, Talk Talk (“Monaco”), and early U2 (“I Came to See the Wreck”) It’s bound to appeal to both longtime enthusiasts and new listeners alike.
